Ski Tuning / Repairs

After tuning skis for the past 30 years we have learned what works and what doesn't. Let us tune your skis and you can decide for yourself what a good tune-up feels like! Most customers aren't sure what tune up they need so we will sum it up for you....

When your skis come from the factory they are tuned to perfection with a Stone Grind tune. Generally speaking you can go from the store to the slopes without worrying (unless you need to pick up the kids...) After skiing a few times on your new skis it might be time for some waxing. You can tell if you need wax when your base has gone from black to a 'chalky' black, or if you're just not gliding smoothly any longer. If you're skiing in the east on our 'boiler plate packed powder' you might want to consider some edge sharpening (Quick Tune). Quick Tunes are done about every 5 - 10 days of skiing and include waxing. In fact, waxing is done on all of our tunes.

After a few 'Quick Tunes' it might be time to consider a 'Stone Grind'. Now a stone grind tune does the edges, but more importantly, it takes care of the base of your skis. The base of your skis need structure, and a stone grind tune will give it that. It also helps eliminate some of those pesky little nicks and scratches you might have noticed on your bases. Periodically some of those scratches might be too deep to be removed by stone grinding, or you might have noticed a deep gouge in your base. This is where P-Tex comes into play.

P-Texing will help fill those deep gouges and will help extend the life of your skis by not allowing water to migrate into the core of your ski. P-Texing should always be done with a Stone Grind to help smooth out the P-Tex and allow the skis to glide without any obstructions.

To sum it up, Quick Tunes every 5-10 days of skiing, Stone Grinds after every 3 - 4 quick tunes, or at the least, once a season. P-Texing when you get some deep gouges.

Bindings
Bindings should always be tested to be sure they are releasing properly. We're talking about your knees here people-- better to be safe than sorry. Over the past 30 years, occasionally bindings have failed function tests. And when they do fail, it is better for that failure to be detected with binding testing equipment than with your knees! At the very least it is a good practice to have your bindings tested at the beginning of every season before skiing on them. We offer a Pre-Season Tune which includes the binding function test and a stone grind tune. This way when the slopes open, you know you are good to go!

I hope my brief overview has helped, and we'll either see you on the slopes or we'll see you when you need us for some ski tuning. ---Eric
